Steven Carpenter Obituary

Steven Paul Carpenter, Sr., 73, of Hazleton, and formerly of Griffith, IN. passed away Friday, July 16, 2021 at Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville. He was born March 22, 1948 in Gibson County to the late Paul Carpenter and Lois (Sherman) Carpenter. He worked as a carpenter all his life and was a member of the Local Carpenter’s Union 1005 and 90 of Evansville. He enjoyed open wheeled modified racing until the day he became ill but the light of his life was spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was loved dearly and will be missed.   

He is survived by his wife of 55 years, Laura Carpenter of Hazleton; children, Steven Carpenter, Jr. (Tricia) of Griffith, Kelly Carpenter Gries of Evansville, Aubrey Carpenter (Kim) of Valparaiso, and Julie Carpenter Auler (Mark) of Elberfeld; grandchildren, Brandon Carpenter (Jessica), Rebecca Brady (David), Jacob Gries (Anita), Nicholas Gries (Kendra), Lucas Gries, Brooklen Gries, Aubrey Paige Carpenter Rollins (Adam), Kaytlyn Buddle (Brett Brown), Jonnica Fisher (Bryan), Andrew Auler (Harley); 11 great-grandchildren; mother-in-law, Leona Newberry; and siblings, Cheryl Pasaye of Princeton, Brenda Rentschler (Jerry) of DeMotte, and Jeff Carpenter of Lowell.  

He is preceded in death by his parents; infant daughter, Jenny Sue Carpenter; infant brother, Jerry Allen Carpenter; and father-in-law, Aubrey Newberry.

A Celebration of Life will be held from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. on Sunday, August 22, 2021 at Hazleton Community Center, 113 W. 2nd St. in Hazleton, IN. If you have a favorite memory of Steven, the family would love for you to write it down and bring it with you for the memory box there. Also, bring any photos you have to share.
