Georgeanna (Straw) Kern

Georgeanna (Straw) Kern, 92, of Griffin, passed away at her home on Friday, April 3, 2026 surrounded by her loving family. She was born August 26, 1933 in Gibson County to the late Winford Darrell Straw and Edith Fern (Jones) Straw. She married Hugh Manford Kern on March 15, 1952, and celebrated 59 years together before his passing in 2011. Georgeanna graduated from Griffin High School and retired from working as a clerk for the United States Bankruptcy Court in 1994 after 27 years. She also worked as a bookkeeper at the Mt. Vernon Court House in the clerk’s office and was a member of Friendship Club of Griffin.

Georgeanna was a life-long member of Griffin Christian Church and attended Mackey Church of the Nazarene. She enjoyed socializing, sitting on her front porch, and spending time with her family. She was known as the ‘Queen of Griffin’ and actively recruited members for the Griffin Town Council and the Ruritan Club with the goal of “Making Griffin Great Again”! She was deeply loved and will be forever missed.

Georgeanna is survived by her children, Randall Kern and Connie Marvel; grandchildren, Aaron Kern (Heather), Carrie Wright (Mike), Joseph Marvel (Jessica), and Jonathan Marvel (Kathleen); great-grandchildren, Arick Kern, Emily Kern, Tori Crawford, Audrey Crawford, Landon Crawford, Luke Garrison, Seth Garrison, Emma Wright, Jaxon Wright, Natalie Marvel, Mariah Marvel, Charlotte Marvel, Manford Marvel, Jacob Marvel, Benjamin Marvel, and her namesake Georgia Marvel; and a great-great-grandchild, Hudson Kern.

Along with her parents and husband, Georgeanna was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Stewart Marvel.

The funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, April 10, 2026 at Mackey Church of the Nazarene officiated by Pastor Jared Henry. The church will have livestreaming available at https://www.youtube.com/@mackeychurchofthenazarene3042 and https://www.facebook.com/mackeynaz.  Burial to follow at Mt. Pleasant Cemetery in Griffin. Visiting hours will be from 4 to 7:00 Thursday evening April 9, 2026 at the church.
