Eldon Russell Butcher, 74, of Oakland City, died on August 2, 2021 at Deaconess Gateway in Evansville. Eldon was born November 25, 1946 to Ruby (Buck) and William Butcher.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Lloyd Butcher.
Eldon was a graduate of Mackey High School in 1964 and attended Oakland City College where he graduated with a degree in art education in 1968. He went on to further his education with a Master's Degree from Ball State University. He was an art and photography teacher at East Central High School in Sunman, IN. Upon moving back to Oakland City, he taught art one year at Wood Memorial High School and then taught in the South Spencer School Corporation for 21 years. During his time teaching he coached girls' and boys' basketball.
Eldon was a writer and photographer for several racing newspapers in the Tri-State area. He later served as competition director for Midwest Sprint Car Series. Besides art, photography, and racing, Eldon enjoyed collecting 1950’s pottery, early cowboy comics and movies and researching he and his wife’s family genealogy.
Eldon is survived by his wife, Oleva (McKinney) Butcher; sons, John (Sherry) and Aaron (Kelly Ingle); grandchildren, Grace, Lincoln, and Logan; and nephews, Lloyd Alan and Curtis Lee Butcher.
A funeral service will be held at 1:00 PM (CST) Saturday, August 7, 2021 at Corn-Colvin Funeral Home in Oakland City with Pastor Matt Malin officiating. Interment will follow at St. Johns Cemetery in Buckskin. A visitation will be held Saturday from 11:00 AM until the hour of service, 1:00 PM at the funeral home.
