Obituary

Charles “Leon” Whittington, 92, of rural Francisco passed away Sunday, September 17, 2023 at the Linda E. White Hospice House in Evansville.  He was born in Pike County, to Charles H. and Mildred M. Whittington. 

Leon retired in 1997 as an Oil Field Well Pumper, working for McCrary Oil Company for 20 years.  He had previously worked for Hansens Manufacturing Co. He attended the First Baptist Church in Princeton, and he graduated from Mt. Olympus High School in 1949, where he played on the basketball team.  He was an avid P.C.H.S. sports fan and coached youth girl softball teams.  Leon was a member of the N.R.A., an avid bird watcher and enjoyed animals. He loved to whistle, chew gum and always had a joke to tell.

Leon is survived by his wife of 32 years, Alice Whittington; children, Debra Cain of Francisco, Rick Whittington of Petersburg, Susan and Jeff Storckman of Princeton, and Ben and Michelle Whittington of Francisco; step-children, Lisa and Dave Sinkhorn, Julie and Greg Harden, and Jill and Mark Farris, all of Princeton; 20 grandchildren, Emily Kamman (Chris), Natalie Roethemeier (Ryan), Cassie Whittington Sutt (Jeremiah), Kelly Sanders (Josh), Marissa Clem (Dustin), Max Storckman (Charly), Mya, Maylin, Maverick and Mathias Storckman; Tristan Whittington (Katie), Taylor, Tanessa and Tinsley Whittington; Brittney Wetekamp (Nathan), Ryan Harden (Lauren), Brittney Abel (Jace), Kyle Cummins (Kelsey), Stephan Farris (Meg), Megan McClellan (Eric); and 17 great-grandchildren, Gavin, Alex, Allison, Catie, Jael, Walker, Bowen, Boone, Hailey, Jacen, Eli, Chandlyr, Makayah, Karsyn, Beckham, Brooks, Burkleigh and 2 more on the way; sister-in law, Betty Whittington of Petersburg; and former wife and mother of Susan and Ben, Linda Springer.

Leon was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Patricia Ann Whittington; infant daughter, Julie Ann Whittington; great grandchild, Alyssa; daughter-in-law, Luanne Whittington; sons-in-law, Curt Cain and Mark Embree; brothers, Fred and wife Grace, Floyd, and Marlin and wife “Pete” Whittington; and a sister, Mary Whittington.

A funeral service will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 26, 2023 at the First Baptist Church, 800 W. Faith Blvd., Princeton, with Pastor Kevin Wilson officiating.  Burial will follow at the Mt. Olive Cemetery in Mt. Olympus. Visitation will be from 3 until 7 p.m. on Monday, September 25, 2023 at the church and from 9 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the church.  The Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton has been entrusted with the arrangements.

Memorial contributions may be made to the First Baptist Church, 800 W. Faith Blvd., Princeton, IN 47670 or to Linda E. White Hospice, 611 Harriet St., Evansville, IN, 47710.   Envelopes will be available at the church.
