Denver Leon “Doc” Chavis Sr., 80, of Princeton, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2019 at his home surrounded by family. He was born on January 6, 1939 in Lyles Station, IN. He is preceded in death by his parents, Marion and Clesta (Greer) Chavis; 2 brothers, Pat and Emmitt Chavis; 2 sisters, Sarah Jones and Mary Whittaker along with 2 grandchildren, Norman Luther Chavis II and S. Lanae Madison.
“Doc” served in the United States Air Force and later joined the Local 103 becoming the first black Iron Worker from 1974-2001. He retired after 27 years of service. After retiring, he began full-time farming raising cattle which he enjoyed. He also started playing softball with a men’s league and began coaching for the men and women’s softball league. He loved gardening and planted a garden every year up to 3 years ago when he became ill.
“Doc” is survived by his wife of 58 years, Agnes E. (Greene) Chavis; 7 children, Stacey (Gregg) Easley of Newburgh, Damon Madison and Norman (Angela) Chavis of Princeton, Denver Chavis Jr (Tina), Cheryl Madison and Jackie Chavis all of Evansville and Breanna Chavis of Vincennes; 15 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren; and 1 honorable grandchild like his own, Kabrielle “Mikah” Johnson.
Funeral service will be held at 1 pm on Friday, November 8, 2019 at Colvin Funeral Home in Princeton, officiated by Rev. Rodney Coffer. Burial will follow at Sand Hill Cemetery in Princeton. Visitation will be from 4 until 8 pm on Thursday, November 7, 2019 at the funeral home. Military graveside rites by Retired Military Veterans.
